What to consider?

Quality Time

Choose a program and school

Earning a credential in Canada usually takes years, it is important to understand the program curriculum before your application. Most programs in Canada require English proficiency results within 2 years (i.e. IELTS, TOEFL), and additional supporting documents might be required for the application depending on the program.

Enhance English skills with ESL

Courses in colleges or universities require English academic reading and writing competency. To achive this, students may enrol in ESL programs (English as a second language course) offered by language schools or post secondary institutions to improve their English competency and continue with their studies.

Working as an international student

Students who are enrolled in an academic program in colleges or universities might be eligible to work. Working eligibility will vary, therefore it is important to verify the criteria and condition of your study permit before employment starts.

Co-op during the study period

Some programs include practicum/internship components. Students who need to take part in co-op work as part of their program will need to apply for a separate permit in addition to the pre-existing study permit.

Work after graduation

Most international students are interested in applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) right after their program completion. However, not all programs are eligible. It's important to check the program details and PGWP requirement before applying.

Pathway to permanent residency

Completing a degree and having work experience in Canada may create opportunities to become a permanent resident in Canada. Depending on the situation, some applicants may also be eligible for immigration pathway programs like those under the Economic Class.
